That’s why I said with the right words, they can paint a thousand different pictures.
Humans created words as a form of communication, and it stimulates our imagination at the same time. Now what if… those words are sexy, juicy, and erotic? What would pop up in your mind if you see or hear those words? For men, they rely more on what they see (actual visuals) to make them horny, but for women, they rely a lot in their imagination to make them horny. That’s why people say the brain is the largest sex organ in your body. Our orgasms are actually driven by the brain, especially with women. They love dirty talk. To answer this question, I want to compare and contrast two types of songs: English songs and Chinese songs. Because the lyrics reflect the culture and society where the lyricists live in. So let’s start with Chinese songs, in particular, traditional Cantonese songs.
Back in the 1980’s and 1990’s, Hong Kong’s overall society is still very conservative. People are dressed conservatively, and even people’s mindsets are more “pure and innocent” in that the majority view sex as only what’s necessary to reproduce and make babies, and don’t view sex as a means of having fun. That’s why if your attire is too exposed or you talk about erotic things in public, you would be shamed for it. Since you cannot talk about these things explicitly in the open, singers and artists who want to further explore the topic of sexuality would need to make the lyrics very subtle. This means they use a lot of metaphors in their lyrics, so that those who get it, understands the hidden meaning behind what the artist is conveying. And those who don’t get it are still not offended, as they usually take those lyrics by the literal meaning.
Let me give you some examples. In 1983, Roman Tam released a song named “激光中” (In the midst of lasers). At that time, the song was considered a “breakthrough” in the CantoPop industry because the lyrics contain daring and seductive elements, and no other songs were doing it. It actually greatly matches Roman’s on-stage persona as he was portrayed to be flamboyant and sexy. Here is the MV, and pay attention to the lyrics:

Right from the beginning, the lyrics said:
光加熱就等於火 火加歌就等於我

The lyrics are tempting the listener to come closer, don’t be shy, and get intimate with the singer. He will charm you with his music and you won’t be able to resist his charisma. Sentences like “此一刻你屬於我 你再也沒法擋” and later on “要與你發生觸摸 以好歌觸摸你心窩” are very flirty lyrics implying elements of “one-night-stand” and “feeling and touching” in that era. And since these words are vague, for those who come to the disco with their partners, and if they really intend to have sex and one night stand, their minds will automatically imagine in that direction and fill in the minute details of how they are feeling up their partner’s entire bodies, kissing passionately, and escalating towards the next step. That’s the power of what lyrics can do.
So back in the 1980’s if you ask me what kind of lyrics cause sexual arousal in Hong Kong, this would be it. This song was so forefront at that time that Roman received lots of criticisms and ridicule because these themes were not accepted by the norms of society. Of course if we look at the song today, we would think it’s quite “tamed”.
Fast forward to the 1990’s, the societies around the world are becoming more open-minded. Hong Kong’s society has also become more open-minded, but still rather conserved. That’s why Chinese lyrics, especially those from CantoPop culture, are still very subtle when dealing with topics containing sexual implications.
In 1996, singer Andy Hui has released a song called “迷糊、情慾、對象”, and as the title implies, it’s a song about lust, passion, and detailed descriptions of erotic parts on a woman’s body. But as I mentioned above, society is still conservative, so although the song did directly mention which body part is being admired by a hallucinating person, the reaction is metaphoric and poetic. So from admiring her luscious lips:
艷麗像野櫻桃的咀 兩片葉欲滴似水
輕輕的吞吐 暗暗已洩露 那是美麗蓓蕾
to her sexy shoulders:

But even with metaphors, this song was once banned from being played in many radio stations due to the “explicitness” of the lyrics. When we look at the song today, we think “Pfft it’s nothing. It’s normal”, so you can imagine how conserved is Hong Kong back then.
There are many other CantoPop song examples that contain sexually-implied lyrics, and all of which express sex and eroticism in a poetic or metaphorical way. Andy Hui has released another song in 1999 called “我是一隻黑膠碟”, as one of the songs for the stage play “行雷閃電”. This song’s main character is a black vinyl disc, so it is telling people to feel free to rub it and feel it and scratch it, flip it around, and do it again:

There are so many OnlyFans, Fansly, and other 18+ creators. And all these phenomenon and also reflected in the lyrics of new songs nowadays.
Similar to the world of English songs in which their culture has always been direct, in-your-face, and uncensored, the lyrics of new CantoPop songs have also become very “direct”. Sexual themes and actions no longer need to hide behind metaphorical curtains, and you can say it as it is without getting heavily reprimanded.
In 2021, a singer named $alty Chick (鹽焗雞) hit the scene with a storm. Not everything in the modern era is direct and in-your-face. There are still some singers / rappers who preserve the traditional metaphoric way of creating an erotic song. One good example is JB’s “西遊記”.

Superficially, the song title is about the famous Chinese mythology “Journey to the West”. But if you take a closer look at the lyrics, you would realize the song title actually has double meaning. For the lecherous ones, the song title could also mean “Navigating within the Pussy” in Chinese. And if we look at this song in that direction, you would realize there are so many sentences containing sexual implications, such as:

Being titled “Journey to the West”, what’s brilliant about this song is that there are references back to the actual Chinese mythology while containing sexual implications, so it both fits the theme and have a play on words. For example, let’s look at the next 4 lines of lyrics:

Western culture is more direct, and they are more liberative towards sex. So English lyrics can straightforwardly talk about swear words, sex, and genital referrals like “Wet Ass Pussy” without getting blasted by the community.
Because of this, there is one BIG difference between English and Chinese lyrics: It’s the attitude towards the opposite sex and relationships in general. Released in 1982, the lyrics of this song is all about persuading your partner to have sex with you, because it’s such a healing process, which helps to “relieve your mind” and “make you feel so fine“. There are many repetitions of sentences like the following to hammer in the message into your mind:

And lastly, we come to Madonna. With the name itself, nothing needs to be said further. Besides being known as “The Queen of Pop”, Madonna is the definition of trend, icon, and sex appeal. Many of her songs push the boundaries of taboo, from “Like a Virgin”, “Holy Water”, “S.E.X”, and “Erotica” are some examples of what I mean. The lyrics again are very direct, like in “Erotica”:

Even if she shrinks the song name to the short form WAP, it doesn’t hide the fact that a mainstream song blatantly uses the words “Ass” and “Pussy” in the same song, as these words are more widely accepted and used by more people around, just like nowadays, saying “Diu” and “仆街” are more common in the Cantonese language, as it’s more of a way to emote now rather than just using it as a curse word to berate someone.

Again, I included the whole song because there are way too many explicit lyrics to miss. When I first heard a remix version of this, Lisa from BlackPink was about to release her singles album “Alter Ego”. Some people created a clickbait song on YouTube, stating that Lisa has leaked her new song “Alter Ego”, and actually that person included Doechii’s version of “Alter Ego” instead. Being a huge Lisa fan, I was curious and took the clickbait. And when I heard all the swearing and explicit lyrics, I was thinking, “Shit man, Lisa is really making a breakthrough with all this explicitness”. When I tried to Google more about Lisa and this “leaked” song of hers, I couldn’t find anything. That’s when I realized the clickbait video has misrepresented titles, and the song is not Lisa’s. I listened to the lyrics closer, and Googled some of the phrases. That was when I found out who is the original singer of this clickbait song, and that’s how I came to know the name Doechii. Although this song is not the best representation of an erotic song, the lyrics bring out the fact that English lyrics nowadays are much looser in terms of using cuss words and sexual actions / intentions.
The world has evolved a lot throughout the past decades, and so have music, songs and their lyrics. In terms of erotic lyrics, Cantonese songs have come a long way from being totally prohibited to hinting sexual implications with metaphorical expressions to straight-forward “I love to fuck!” emotes. Still, a lot of Cantonese songs nowadays still pursue the metaphor route, and this is good because metaphors leave more subtlety and more room for imagination to the listener. And subtlety is like foreplay, where the guy and girl tease and flirt with each other, meandering around the directness, exploring each other’s fantasies. As for English songs, they have been quite direct even in the past (1980’s), and they are becoming even more direct nowadays. Directness is like the intercourse phase. I am assertive and go straight in to do what I want. Yes I want to fuck you, lick your pussy, feel you up, and want you to suck my dick. And I’m not afraid to say this without metaphors or subtleties within the lyrics. Subtlety or directness, which is better? Actually, there is no absolute metric to evaluate this. In my opinion, foreplay and Intercourse are two different things and both have their own fanbase, so they can co-exist well with each other.
Finally, song lyrics are different from erotica novels in that they are combined with music and melodies to make your entire experience more vivid, immersive, and memorable.
